VOTD: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - ‘All Wash Out’
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have garnered a reputation for being very inclusive with fans. I found this to be true both times I’ve seen the band live. At the first show, front man Alex Ebert invited the entire audience to sit down in the grass and sing a song with him. During the second show, a microphone was passed around the crowd simply so that people could have an opportunity to tell their stories. The band engaged with fans once again by choosing a fan-generated video for “All Wash Out,” a track from the sophomore album Here.
The video was made by an NYU undergrad, Sophia Glaser, and a couple of her friends. It features Sophia gracefully wandering through forests, fields, and streams in search of some sort of answer. The smooth flow of the different natural settings is paired well with the song’s slow but persistent tune. What makes this video important is that Sophia, who was only 20, passed away suddenly a few months ago. The video was originally made for a contest and her family played it at her memorial. Sophia’s sister Luna then sent the video to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. When viewing “All Wash Out” on YouTube, you can click on the “About” tab to read the touching letter Luna wrote to the band.
